Raila Odinga Advocates for Africa’s Representation at UN Security Council

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has announced his intention to push for Africa to secure two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council if he assumes the role of African Union Commission Chairperson in February next year.

Speaking at the Mjadala Afrika debate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday, Raila emphasized the need for Africa, made up of 55 nations, to have a voice in the council to safeguard the continent’s interests in global security discussions.

He urged that these two representatives should possess veto powers to prevent proposed resolutions from being enacted.

Raila’s comments resonate with President William Ruto’s ongoing campaign for reforms in the global financial system to better address Africa’s economic challenges. For months, Ruto has criticized foreign entities that label Africa as a risky borrower, despite the continent’s abundant natural resources. He has called for fair opportunities for Africa to leverage its potential.

At a recent event at KICC in May 2024, Ruto stated, “A better, more responsive, and fairer international development financial architecture is urgently needed. Time is of the essence.” He also noted that the African Union should evolve from its original role as a liberation movement to effectively tackle contemporary challenges facing the continent.
