PS Kimotho: Gov’t targeting Schools to grow 15B trees

Forestry Principal Secretary, Mr. Ephantus Kimotho has said, that the country is experiencing the worst drought ever and in order to overcome “we must all grow trees”.

Speaking during the launch of a tree nursery at Daystar University main campus in Athi River today, PS Kimotho said the government was working with the youths in Kazi Mazingira to ensure they plant and grow trees.

“The Government is targeting over 20,000 primary and secondary schools in the country to ensure the 15 billion trees are grown and the target is meet by 2032”, PS Kimotho said.

The event culminated in a tree planting exercise where the PS planted the Warbugia Ugandensis tree.

Daystar Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban P. Ayiro said the institution is on the road to grow 50,000 trees and called on the Ministry to support with tree seedlings to enable them achieve their target.

Mr. Daniel Juma, CEO Global Peace Foundation Kenya thanked Dr. Manu Chandaria for sponsoring the nursery which will produce more than 60,000 seedlings annually to be planted within the Daystar campus and the environs. “This is the 6th Seedlings nursery that we are unveiling courtesy of Dr. Chandaria and Daystar is the 1st University institution to host one” said Juma

The event which was organized by the Chandaria Foundation and Daystar University in partnership with the Global Peace Foundation Kenya was geared towards promoting conservation of natural resources and growing of trees for greener future.

In attendance were the Conservation Secretary Alfred Gichu, Daniel Juma CEO of the Global Peace Foundation Kenya, Anurag Mishra from Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) Daystar University Students among others.
