President Kenyatta vouches for CS Amb. Amina Mohamed for World Trade Organization top job

President Uhuru Kenyatta has endorsed Kenyan Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed candidature for the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In a statement released from Harambee House Nairobi on Thursday 9th July 2020, President Kenyatta said “Kenya offers Amina C. Mohamed, a uniquely qualified person, to lead the WTO at this critical time. If selected, she would be the first African and indeed, the first woman to serve at the helm of the World Trade Organization.”

The President said that it is time that Africa took up her responsibility of serving at the helm of WTO and re-iterated the urgent need to revitalize the WTO to better serve the needs of all nations, large and small.

Amb Mohamed submitted her candidature on 7th July 2020 and will contest against five other candidates, including two from Africa, to secure the seat that eluded her seven years ago.  If successful she will replace Brazilian Robert Azevêdo, who will be stepping down later this year.

The World Trade Organization is a rule-making body based in Geneva that guides international trade and arbitrates disputes that was formed in 1995.

Other candidates for the top post are former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Egyptian commercial law academic Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh, Jesús Seade Kuri of Mexico, Moldova’s Tudor Ulianovschi and Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea. The the six candidates will now meet with the General Council to make pitches and respond to questions.
