A shocking scene unfolded on Thursday when thousands of enraged residents stormed the Chemase Police Post in Nandi County, freeing a murder suspect before stoning him to death and subsequently burning his body.
The suspect, identified as Victor Kimutai, 30, was in custody for allegedly murdering a 38-year-old man whose dismembered body had been discovered. According to Tinderet Police Commander Johnson Mwariga, Kimutai had confessed to the crime and even guided investigators to the location where he had hidden the victim’s head and other body parts.
The incident incited outrage among over 3,000 residents, who demanded that the suspect be released into their custody. When police refused to comply, the crowd became violent, setting a police vehicle ablaze before overpowering officers and accessing the cells to confront Kimutai.
“After rescuing the suspect, they stoned him to death and burned his body. They then dispersed in different directions,” stated a police report obtained by Citizen Digital.
In response to the tragic events, the National Police Service (NPS) condemned the mob action, urging the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. NPS Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to take its course after an arrest.
“The destruction of police property, as witnessed at Chemase Police Post, hampers our ability to serve the community effectively. We call on the public to cooperate with law enforcement to enhance safety in our areas,” she added.
