
Siaya Governor James Orengo urges a transparent investigation into the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls’ Academy on May 28, 2026, emphasizing the need to uncover the truth behind this devastating event.
On his X account, Orengo expressed heartfelt condolences for the 16 students lost in the fire, stressing that justice must prevail for the victims and their families.
“I am heartbroken by the fire at Utumishi Girls Academy. My thoughts are with the parents mourning their children in this unimaginable loss,” Orengo shared.
He insists that anyone responsible for negligence, including school officials and ministry inspectors, must be held accountable.
“No cover-ups will be tolerated. Those found negligent must face the law. It’s time for the government to prioritize our children’s safety,” he stated.
In response, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen reassured the nation that a thorough investigation into the Utumishi Girls Academy fire is underway, following the tragic loss of 16 students and many injuries.
Murkomen confirmed that emergency response teams, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and crime scene experts, are already on-site.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that at least 132 students have been affected by the fire, with many evacuated and receiving treatment in various hospitals.
“Update: Currently, 132 students have been impacted by the fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy, with several receiving medical care,” stated the Kenya Red Cross.
In light of the tragedy, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migosi Ogamba announced the indefinite closure of Utumishi Girls Academy, following the devastating fire that claimed 16 lives and injured many.
On May 28, 2026, Ogamba shared that students would be released to their parents as the government swiftly secures the school, with investigations ongoing to determine the fire’s cause.
“We will release students to their parents today. The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” Ogamba confirmed.
