The newly ppointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has denied claims that the Nairobi Senator and ODM’s Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, will be expelled from the Orange Party.
In an interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the Siaya senator stated that the SG is a vital component of the Orange party and will continue to be one.
Oburu recognized that the SG and other young politicians within ODM have sometimes voiced strong views on various matters, but they are still integral to the party.
“You saw he is the one who read our party resolution. I have talked to him, and he has no issues. He is young and among the politicians with a strong opinion. He can at times go overboard, but we are with him in the party,” he remarked.
Oburu stressed that in any instance of overreach, the party will utilize existing internal regulations to address such matters.
“He is still with us and has done nothing wrong to be removed from the party. If it so happens we have a party mechanism for dealing with such issues internally as a party,” he concluded.
Oburu’s opinions of the fiery politician coincide with growing rumors that the SG may be leaving the party, which gained traction after Raila Odinga’s passing. Nelson Havi, a former president of the Law Society of Kenya, is the most recent to support the claims. He stated that following Raila Odinga’s death, some elected leaders from the Nyanza region wanted the ODM official expelled from the political organization.
Wanted out? Havi based his arguments on the recently established cooperative relationship between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Oburu Odinga-led group in the formation of a broad-based government, an arrangement that Sifuna has previously disparaged. The young elected ODM leaders from Luo Nyanza are the ones who have voiced their displeasure with Sifuna.
Havi stated in a local TV interview on Monday, October 27, 2025, that Raila Odinga wanted ODM to be a national party rather than an ethnic party. Despite people’s persistent efforts, Edwin Sifuna remained a young leader in ODM.
