Obinna Urges ODM to Hand Over Party’s Future to Babu Owino

Comedian and TV host Oga Obinna has urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to embrace a new generation of leadership by rallying behind Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, saying he embodies the same political energy and divine favour that defined the late Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a video shared on his Instagram handle on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Obinna said ODM’s future depends on whether it is willing to trust youthful leaders who can connect with the Gen Z electorate. He proposed that the party should either endorse Babu Owino as its Nairobi gubernatorial candidate in 2027 or appoint him as the party’s Secretary General, arguing that such a move would keep ODM relevant in Kenya’s changing political landscape.

Obinna described Babu as a leader with the passion, charisma, and people-driven spirit that once made Raila Odinga a symbol of hope for many Kenyans. “Among all ODM leaders today, Babu is the only one who carries the same favour and connection Raila had with the people,” he said, adding that the youthful MP’s influence among the younger generation is unmatched within the party.

He warned that ODM risks losing its appeal among the youth if it sticks to old structures and fails to promote leaders who represent the aspirations of modern voters. “Gen Z already see Babu as the face of ODM,” Obinna remarked. “If the party ignores that reality, it will struggle to remain relevant.”

His comments came shortly after ODM’s National Executive Council (NEC) named Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the acting party leader following the death of Raila Odinga. The NEC said Oburu, Raila’s elder brother and a founding member of the party, would hold the position temporarily until a substantive leader is elected.

“The NEC has designated Senator Oburu Odinga to serve as acting party leader until the top organs of the party convene to elect a substantive leader,” read part of the statement.

Obinna’s sentiments reflect growing discussions within ODM about succession, generational change, and how the party can maintain its influence in a new political era.
