In a proactive move to bolster road safety across Kenya, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has introduced five essential directives aimed at commercial vehicle owners. These guidelines are designed to ensure that vehicles are not only roadworthy but also operated safely, ultimately reducing accidents and saving lives.
First and foremost, vehicle owners are reminded of the importance of maintaining their vehicles in optimal condition. Keeping detailed maintenance records for at least two years is now mandatory, ensuring that all vehicles are regularly serviced and fit for the road.
Equally crucial is the hiring of qualified drivers. The NTSA emphasizes the need for regular road safety training for drivers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate Kenya’s often challenging road conditions.
To further promote safety, the new directives stipulate that drivers must not exceed maximum driving hours. This measure aims to combat fatigue-related accidents, ensuring that drivers remain alert and responsive while on the road.
In the unfortunate event of a fatal crash, vehicle owners are required to report the incident within 20 hours. This prompt reporting facilitates swift investigations and enhances accountability.
Lastly, the installation of safety features such as speed limiters and telematic systems is now encouraged. These technologies not only monitor vehicle performance but also enhance overall safety for drivers and other road users.
By adhering to these directives, commercial vehicle owners can play a pivotal role in fostering a safer driving environment in Kenya. Let’s all work together to make our roads safer for everyone!
