A road crash killed at least nine people early Monday in the Karai area of Naivasha. It happened on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. A Greenline bus and a 14-seater matatu collided.
Police report the crash took place around 2 a.m. on January 5.
Seven victims died at the scene. Two were children. Two more passed away later in the hospital.
Other passengers got hurt. Rescuers rushed them to Naivasha District Hospital.
The bus traveled from Nakuru toward Nairobi. The matatu headed the other way. Police continue to check the cause.
Local leaders call the Karai stretch a danger spot for crashes. They have run safety talks for drivers.
Just last month, the area made news again. Former MP and minister Cyrus Jirongo died there. His Mercedes-Benz hit a Climax bus head-on.
This crash raised the death toll to 18 from Sunday through Monday morning.
Victims came from all kinds. They included passengers, walkers, drivers, a motorbike rider, and a bike rider.
Rescuers noted 59 injuries in the same time frame.
The hurt ones were passengers, riders, drivers, back-seat riders, and one walker. Hospitals treated them. Some still stay admitted.
This crash follows another nearby. Six died days earlier at Kikopey in Gilgil. A trailer smashed into a matatu on the same highway.
On Friday, January 2, six passengers lost their lives on Mombasa Road at Katumani near Konza City. A bus struck a matatu there. Seven more suffered serious wounds.
Leaders keep telling drivers to drive safe. Road crashes stay a big threat to people. The National Transport and Safety Authority runs awareness drives.
Police probe all these recent crashes.
