Morocco Beat Netherlands on Penalties to Reach World Cup Last 16

Morocco triumphed over the Netherlands in a nail-biting penalty shootout, securing their place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup. The match, held in Monterrey, ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time.

Key to this victory was Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, who made a pivotal save against Crysencio Summerville’s fourth penalty. Striker Ismael Saibari then confidently stepped up to convert the decisive spot-kick, leading to a 3-2 win in the shootout on Monday.

This exciting victory propels Morocco into a last-16 showdown with Canada in Houston on Saturday.

The match had reached extra time after Issa Diop scored a stunning equalizer for Morocco in the first minute of stoppage time, just as the Netherlands seemed poised for victory. The Dutch had taken the lead in the second half with a goal from Cody Gakpo, who played just days after his partner confirmed the tragic loss of their unborn son. Gakpo fell to the ground, visibly emotional, as his teammates enveloped him in a heartfelt embrace.

Morocco’s determination shone through as they pushed for extra time, with Diop heading in a goal from substitute Chemsdine Talbi’s cross during injury time.

Throughout this intense match, Morocco created more scoring opportunities. Both teams engaged in fierce tackles, testing the patience of Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio. The Atlas Lions nearly took the lead in the 20th minute when Neil El Aynaoui directed an Achraf Hakimi corner toward goal, only to be thwarted by a remarkable reflex save from Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Verbruggen remained busy, soon tipping a powerful shot from Hakimi over the bar. The match’s intensity escalated midway through the half when Saibari narrowly avoided punishment after elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke. Despite enjoying significant possession, the Dutch struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.

Their best chance came in the 44th minute when Micky van de Ven unleashed a fierce shot from the edge of the area, which Bounou expertly tipped over the goal. Van Hecke continued to be involved, sustaining a head injury in a collision but then delivering a crunching tackle on El Aynaoui just before the half-time whistle.

As the first half concluded, Saibari narrowly missed connecting with a cross that zipped across the Dutch goal.

The second half was filled with end-to-end action and seemed to favor the Netherlands when coach Ronald Koeman made aggressive substitutions, including bringing on forward Wout Weghorst after a hydration break. Weghorst quickly made an impact, flicking a long ball to Summerville, who set up Gakpo for a well-timed goal.

With Gakpo’s Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk expertly organizing the defense, the Netherlands appeared to be on track for victory. However, Diop’s late header forced the match into extra time.

Morocco almost broke the deadlock in the 96th minute when Soufiane Rahimi advanced on goal, only to be denied by an astonishing save from Verbruggen.

The Netherlands managed to hold on for penalties. Despite Morocco missing their first attempt when El Aynaoui hit the bar, the North African team rallied to clinch victory.
