Chief Justice Martha Koome has proudly accepted the inaugural Sejong Legal Culture Award in Seoul, South Korea, celebrating her exceptional leadership in enhancing the rule of law, broadening access to justice, and safeguarding vulnerable groups.
On Wednesday, September 16, 2026, she made history as the first international recipient of this prestigious award, jointly bestowed by the Supreme Court of Korea and the World Bank.
This accolade acknowledges her significant contributions to judicial independence, reforms within the justice system, and the protection of at-risk populations, including women and children.
Named after King Sejong the Great, the award reflects his dedication to a people-centered approach to governance, emphasizing the importance of responsive institutions that meet the needs and rights of everyday citizens.
During the ceremony, South Korea’s Chief Justice Jo Hee-dae highlighted the enduring relevance of this philosophy in contemporary justice systems, particularly in ensuring that vulnerable individuals can access legal protections.
The Korea Legal Aid Center for Family Relations also received recognition for its dedicated efforts over the past seven decades in providing legal assistance and safeguarding vulnerable communities.
Koome’s achievement occurs amidst a backdrop of expanding judicial cooperation between Kenya and South Korea, as both nations explore collaborative opportunities in digital justice, artificial intelligence, case management, judicial training, and innovation.
Earlier this month, Koome engaged in discussions with South Korean Ambassador to Kenya Kang Hyungshik, focusing on strengthening the partnership between their respective judiciaries.
The Chief Justice has consistently emphasized the critical role of justice and the rule of law in fostering Kenya-South Korea relations, alongside collaborations in technology, health, agriculture, and infrastructure.
The Kenya Embassy in Seoul highlighted the award as a testament to Koome’s leadership and the broader efforts of the Judiciary, underscoring its importance for elevating Kenyan women’s leadership on the global stage.
“As Kenya’s first female Chief Justice, Her Ladyship’s recognition stands as a symbol of immense national pride and a powerful affirmation of Kenyan women’s leadership internationally. This milestone also signifies the strengthening relationship between the judiciaries of Kenya and Korea,” the embassy stated.
