Leopards maul K’ogalo in a Mashemeji derby

AFC Leopards today beat their traditional rivals Gor Mahia 1-2 in a pulsating Mashemeji derby played at Nyayo stadium, Nairobi.

In what could turn out to be a title decider for Gor Mahia, should Tusker FC continue with their in-form run, Gor will now need to win all their remaining matches – which include beating Tusker FC – in order to win the league this season.

In a match attended by President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the K’ogalo fraternity had everything to their advantage to win the Mashemeji derby. AFC Leopards have had a lucklastre performance, and all signs pointed to a Gor win.

However, from the start of the game, to the last whistle, it was evident that Leopards had their game plan well. They outplayed Gor Mahia at the heart of the midfield, something that saw K’ogalo lose many balls, with misplaced passes.

K’ogalo had the first chance to score when they got a penalty but their dangerman Benson Omalla threw away the opportunity when he missed the penalty kick. In less than ten minutes time, Leopards also got a penalty kick, which they converted to lead by one goal to nil. Gor Mahia then equalised to bring the scoreline to 1-1. But before the halftime whistle, Leopards got their second goal – which made them break for halftime ahead in the Mashemeji derby.

The second half went without any of the two sides scoring, which confirmed Leopards’ victory over Gor Mahia for the first time in seven years, the last one being in 2016.

Today’s Mashemeji derby results mean that Tusker FC are now just one point ahead of K’ogalo, having played the same number of games – 30.
