Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged government agencies to accelerate flood mitigation efforts in Nairobi as the city braces for the anticipated El Niño rains.
During a meeting with leaders from the roads, energy, and waterway sectors, Kindiki emphasized the need for tailored preparedness measures due to Nairobi’s unique population, infrastructure, and urban challenges.
The gathering included heads of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Kenya Power, and the Nairobi Rivers Commission, along with representatives from the State Departments for Energy, Roads, and Urban Development, as well as Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The agencies committed to speeding up critical actions such as dredging, clearing drainage systems, inspecting power lines, and implementing other strategies to minimize the effects of heavy rainfall.
Residents in vulnerable areas are encouraged to follow relocation guidance and move to higher, safer locations as directed.
The Deputy President reassured the public that safe grounds have been identified and that any relocations will be temporary, organized, and conducted with compassion.
“Residents of Nairobi can count on the Government’s dedication to preventing loss or damage and following public safety protocols. We will provide food, medical assistance, and support for anyone affected, ensuring that relocations to safe areas are handled with care,” Kindiki stated.
As the forecast predicts intensified El Niño rains in October, authorities alert the public to the potential for flooding, road damage, and electricity disruptions in at-risk areas.
