Kibera Law courts have remained deserted as court officials feared for their lives due to the ongoing demonstrations by Azimio supporters.
The step taken by the all court officials, including the magistrate, has been informed by the ongoing weekly demos by the opposition coalition party Azimio La Umoja One Kenya. Last week, it was impossible for the court proceedings to continue inside Kibera Law courts courtroom, as the demonstrators were all over the court precincts.
The situation has been heightened due to the fact that Kibra constituency – where Kibera Law Courts, where situated – is considered as Raila’s political ‘bedroom’’. So far, many cases have been pushed forward due to the unfriendly situation that the sprawling slum has found itself in. “We cannot do cases where insecurity thrives, already judicial officers who visit this court on demo days are prone to attacks, as you can see the youths have already barricaded the roads, where will a magistrate pass through when needed, ” a lawyer said.
Today being another day christened ‘public holiday’ the Azimio stalwart Raila Odinga, it would be foolhardy for any official activity, like court process, to continue within Nairobi in general, and in Kibra in particular.
The post likely scenario, which has made a lot of people to remain in their houses, has been the unruly behaviour of the demonstrators. Even though Narc-K leader Martha Karua said that that it’d be a peaceful demonstration in the country, the truth of the matter is that there are bound to be witnessed unruly behaviours during, and after, the demonstrations.
