Floods Claim 88 Lives, Thousands Displaced as Heavy Rains Persist

The ongoing floods triggered by heavy rains across the country have resulted in a tragic death toll of 88 individuals.

In an update released via X on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) highlighted the plight of thousands of displaced families and the extensive damage to critical infrastructure.

The NPS reported that at least 2,690 families have been forced to evacuate their homes, currently seeking refuge in temporary evacuation centers as relentless rains continue to impact several regions.

In one of the most heartbreaking incidents, a landslide in Kilungu Sub-County, Makueni County, tragically claimed the lives of two children and left four others injured.

Authorities emphasize that the situation remains precarious, with additional areas facing increased risks of landslides and flash floods as rainfall persists.

The NPS stated, “As torrential rains continue across the nation, multiple regions are grappling with severe flooding, landslides, and other hazards linked to heavy rainfall, placing communities in distress and significantly impacting critical infrastructure. In Kilungu Sub-County, Makueni County, a landslide has sadly resulted in the loss of two young lives and injuries to four others.”

As of March 24, 2026, reports indicate that the floods have claimed 88 lives and displaced 2,690 families, who are now residing in temporary evacuation centers.

The heavy rains have rendered many roads impassable and caused substantial damage to key bridges, complicating ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

Emergency teams face challenges in accessing some of the most severely affected areas, which delays vital assistance to those in need.

Multi-agency response teams, including police and disaster response units, have been deployed nationwide and are on high alert. They are actively engaged in search and rescue operations, distributing relief supplies, and working diligently to restore access to damaged infrastructure.

According to the NPS, “The ongoing heavy downpours have rendered numerous roads impassable and inflicted significant damage on several bridges, complicating relief operations and restricting access to affected communities.”

The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation, cautioning that heavy rains are likely to persist in the coming days.

In light of these developments, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety guidelines, such as avoiding the crossing of flooded rivers and refraining from driving through fast-moving water.

Residents in high-risk areas should heed instructions from emergency services and relocate immediately if advised.

The government encourages citizens to report emergencies through official channels, including emergency lines 999 and 911, as well as anonymous reporting platforms.
