Court of Appeal Judge Martha Koome , on the 28th of October 2020, received a Runners-up Award as United Nations Kenya Person of The Year 2020.
Also recognized were the 15 Kenyatta University students who responded to the Covid-19 Pandemic and innovated the smart Mechanical Ventilator who emerged winners of the 2020 UN Kenya Persons of the Year. The team consisted of two electrical engineers, six biomedical engineers, three mechanical engineers, one civil engineer, a medical ,a pharmacy and a nursing student.
The UN Award was introduced in 2002 as the collective UN family of agencies honour, to an individual and/or an institution for succeeding to bring to public notice significant issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals ,which are sustainable and serve as an inspiration to all Kenyans, and in keeping with the ideals of the UN.
Lady Justice Koome was recognized for her advocacy for the rights of children in conflict with the law as well as child victims and is congratulated for upholding professional integrity in the justice field.
Koome chaired the National Council on Administration of Justice (NCAJ ) Special Task Force ,on Children matters that had called to attention the predicament of children in the justice system.
Through Koome , the task force marshaled and synchronized reviews on the Children’s Act in line with the 2010 Kenyan Constitution .The task force also developed thrived directives to deal with children during the Covid-19 pandemic.
