James Orengo Questions IEBC Credibility Ahead of 2027 Polls

Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed his lack of confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as the next General Election approaches. However, he reassured that he trusts Kenya’s legal and constitutional framework.

In a recent interview, Orengo highlighted the importance of democratic institutions and constitutional safeguards for ensuring free and fair elections, despite his concerns about the commission’s interference with electoral laws and technology.

Orengo also cautioned that President William Ruto might try to maintain power even if he loses the 2027 election, pointing to possible authoritarian tendencies and regional influences. He believes Ruto faces challenges due to shifting voter dynamics and has lost ground in crucial areas like Mount Kenya.

In response, the IEBC issued a statement addressing recent comments from some politicians that could undermine public confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes. They emphasized that such remarks create anxiety and mislead the public, warning that they undermine the integrity of elections.

The IEBC reaffirmed its exclusive responsibility for conducting and supervising elections, as outlined in Article 88 of the Constitution of Kenya, and stated that this mandate cannot be challenged by any individual or political entity.
