Jacktone Odhiambo jailed for 50 Years for murder of LGBTQ activist Chiloba

An Eldoret court has jailed Jacktone Odhiambo for 50 years for the brutal murder of LGBTQ activist Edwin Kiprotich, popularly known as Chiloba.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi of the Eldoret High Court characterized the murder as a premeditated act of malice, highlighting its severity and the deliberate cruelty involved.

The judge emphasized that Odhiambo’s actions were not only intentional but also displayed a shocking disregard for human life. Despite the gravity of the crime, the court noted that Kenya’s constitutional abolition of the death penalty meant that a life sentence was not an option.

Justice Nyakundi reflected on the profound emotional impact of Chiloba’s untimely death on his family, particularly as he was their only son. The loss has irrevocably altered the family’s future, deepening the tragedy of this case.

Additionally, the court was informed that Odhiambo had committed a sexual assault prior to taking Chiloba’s life, further aggravating the heinous nature of his actions. This case has drawn significant attention, underscoring ongoing concerns about violence against LGBTQ individuals in Kenya.
