Israel Confirms Soldier Struck Jesus Statue in Lebanon, Vows Action

Israel’s military confirmed Monday that a viral image showing one of its soldiers striking a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon is authentic, calling the act “wholly inconsistent” with the values expected of its troops.

The photograph, widely shared on social media, appears to show an Israeli soldier wielding a sledgehammer against the head of a crucified Jesus statue that had fallen off its cross. The sculpture is located in the Christian village of Debl in southern Lebanon, close to the Israeli border, according to the local municipality. Officials could not immediately confirm whether the statue had been damaged.

In a statement posted on its official X account, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it viewed the incident with “great severity.” Following an initial examination, the army determined that the image depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.

“The soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops,” the army said.

The incident is now being investigated by the Northern Command and is being addressed through the chain of command. The IDF added that “appropriate measures will be taken against those involved,” though it did not elaborate on what those measures might entail.

The army also said it is working with the local Christian community to “restore the statue to its place,” signaling an effort to repair both the physical damage and the broader diplomatic fallout from the incident.

The episode has drawn sharp criticism, particularly given the sensitivity of religious symbols in a region marked by deep sectarian divisions. While Israel and Lebanon remain technically in a state of war, incidents involving disrespect toward religious sites or icons can escalate tensions quickly.

For the Christian community in southern Lebanon, the statue held both spiritual and cultural significance. The village of Debl, like many border communities, has endured repeated cycles of conflict. This latest incident adds another layer of grievance.

As the investigation continues, the IDF’s response will be closely watched—not only in Lebanon but also by Israel’s international allies, many of whom have large Christian constituencies. How the military handles the fallout could have implications beyond the immediate chain of command.
