The recent awarding of honorary degrees to lawmakers Oscar Sudi, Didmus Barasa, and John Waluke by Northwestern Christian University has ignited backlash from professional bodies.
The Institution of Engineers of Kenya has voiced strong objections, asserting that the title “engineer” is legally protected and that its misuse undermines academic integrity. They argue that Sudi’s honorary doctorate in Leadership, Administration, and Management diminishes the value of genuine academic achievements.
Following the controversy, Sudi appeared on a list related to the Commission, which some critics claim is an illegal entity. Northwestern Christian University, which describes itself as theologically accredited by the International Association for Christian Education Accountability, also awarded Barasa an honorary degree in Leadership and Governance during a graduation ceremony in Eldoret City, attended by former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri as the Chief Guest.
Additionally, Sirisia MP John Waluke received an honorary degree in Public Administration and Political Science. The situation has raised questions about the legitimacy of the institution and the implications of awarding honorary degrees to politicians, prompting calls for a review of such practices to uphold academic standards.
