Residents of Daraja Mbili village in Kisumu County were left talking after a 63-year-old grandmother dramatically sent away her daughter-in-law, accusing her of failing to give her son the affection he deserves.
The grandmother, whose identity details remained scanty, claimed that her 23-year-old daughter-in-law had neglected her marital duties, which she alleged was the main reason her son had turned to extramarital affairs.
“The young woman doesn’t know how to show love to her husband. That is why my son has been forced to look outside his marriage,” the granny insisted, sparking mixed reactions in the village.
Neighbors and relatives were divided over the incident. Some supported the grandmother, arguing that the wife had not adjusted well into marriage, while others condemned the move, saying it was unfair to burden a young woman with blame without addressing the son’s own behavior.
Community elders have since called for dialogue, urging both families to embrace reconciliation rather than escalate tensions. They noted that such disputes are common in rural Kenya, where traditional expectations often clash with modern realities of marriage.
The young woman has since returned to her parents’ home as her future in the marriage remains uncertain. Meanwhile, residents continue to debate whether the grandmother’s actions were justified or a case of undue interference in her son’s marriage.
