The government plans to collaborate with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review the allowances for our athletes, aiming to uplift their spirits and improve their well-being.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi emphasized that the SRC determines the current local and overseas allowances for athletes representing our nation in various sporting events.
Speaking in Kandara town on Friday during a community engagement, PS Mwangi expressed the ministry’s commitment to open dialogue with stakeholders, including the Harambee Stars players, through the Football Kenya Federation, to advocate for increased allowances.
“All allowances for athletes receive authorization from the SRC. When the need arises for a review, we proactively engage the commission and await their approval,” the PS explained.
He assured that the ministry is actively working to address the allowance concerns for the Harambee Stars.
Additionally, he clarified that the process of requisitioning player allowances follows legal protocols, which can sometimes lead to delays in settling outstanding claims.
“The process of requesting funds from the treasury is thorough and requires verification, which may result in delays; however, we ensure prompt payment once the funds arrive,” he stated.
The PS wished the Harambee Stars great success in their upcoming match against Eritrea on Saturday and encouraged all Kenyans to support the team.
He also urged athletes representing our country in any sport to embody the highest levels of patriotism and pride, viewing the wearing of national colors as a pinnacle of achievement.
“Even when challenges arise, let’s prioritize our nation. Wearing the national colors and representing our country is the ultimate expression of patriotism and honor,” he remarked.
The Harambee Stars will face Eritrea in an AFCON 2027 Group D qualifier match on Saturday at Nyayo Stadium.
