Four individuals have been found guilty of murdering former Kabete MP George Muchai, along with his two bodyguards and their driver in Nairobi back in 2015.
Milimani High Court Justice Kanyi Kimondo delivered the verdict, convicting Erick Munyera Isabwa, Raphael Kimani Gacii, Mustafa Kimani Anyonyi, and Stephen Asitiva Lipapo on four counts of murder, affirming that the prosecution established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
These four are currently serving death sentences at Kamiti Maximum Prison for robbery with violence.
The court learned that Muchai and his bodyguards, PC Samuel Kimathi Kailikia and PC Samuel Lekakeny Matanta, along with driver PC Stephen Ituu Wambugu, were tragically killed in the early hours of February 7, 2015, along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.
The prosecution presented 37 witnesses, including newspaper vendor Ronald Nyangaresi, who recounted that Muchai, a loyal customer for a decade, stopped to buy newspapers around 3:40 am.
As Nyangaresi prepared to deliver the newspapers, another saloon car obstructed Muchai’s vehicle, and a masked man with a G3 rifle emerged from the co-driver’s side, opening fire.
Muchai’s wife, Susan Nyawira Muchai, and her sister, Judy Wanjiku Ngige, testified that they were traveling in a vehicle ahead of Muchai’s car after leaving Galileo Lounge in Westlands. Upon hearing gunshots and noticing that Muchai’s vehicle had stopped, they pulled over, only to find the four occupants shot and the vehicle’s windows shattered.
The court also heard that a Nissan Sunny, registration KBF 796A, was carjacked along Waiyaki Way around 10 pm on February 6, 2015. Its owner, Michael Ngatia Gituto, confirmed that this vehicle was later used to block Muchai’s car.
Gladys Waithera and her sister Irene Wambui also testified about being carjacked, blindfolded, and forced into the boot of their vehicle. They heard several gunshots after the vehicle stopped before being abandoned at Kamandura near Tigoni.
A ballistics examiner and a CCTV analyst provided crucial evidence, presenting footage that captured 35 number plates near Kenyatta Avenue.
Four autopsy reports from government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed that the victims died from gunshot wounds inflicted by a high-velocity firearm at close range.
The court determined that the four accused acted with a shared intent in committing these heinous murders.
Justice Kimondo has ordered the retrieval of their previous records and directed the Probation Department to prepare pre-sentence reports and Victim Impact Statements.
The court will reconvene to hear sentencing submissions on December 16, 2026.
