Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has urged for the urgent arrest of individuals involved in the abductions of young Kenyans that have been occurring since June 2024.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Muturi emphasized the need to address this alarming trend, stating that the ongoing abductions must be curtailed immediately.
Reflecting on his personal experience, Muturi shared the emotional distress his family endured following the disappearance of his son in June 2024. Among those reportedly abducted are Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplangat, and cartoonist Gideon Kibet, known as Kibet Bull.
Despite victim testimonies suggesting involvement by law enforcement officers, the National Police Service has denied any connection to the abductions.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin, and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja failed to appear in court as summoned on January 8. In response to CS Muturi, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations invited him to record a statement. “Considering that only the son volunteered to record a statement, we wish to invite CS Muturi and anyone with information regarding the incidents to provide their statements to DCI Kilimani.” said the DCI
The DCI also revealed that several inquiry files are in the advanced stages of investigation, with plans to forward them to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) upon completion. “The DCI has opened multiple inquiry files that are at various investigation stages. These cases will soon be submitted to the ODPP once the investigations are concluded,” the agency stated.
As calls for accountability grow, the families of the abducted individuals remain hopeful for justice and swift action from the authorities.
