Levi Wandera once guarded former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He says it was easier to work for Martha Karua, leader of the PLP party, than for Gachagua.
In a podcast interview aired on Sunday, December 21, 2025, Wanderi shared his views. He served as security for both leaders. Karua proved much easier to work with.
Karua checked on her guards often. She asked how their day went. She wanted to know about any problems they faced. Her flexible and humble style kept everyone sharp.
Wanderi says this differs from Gachagua and other leaders he knew. Karua listens to her team. She cares about their state. Others do not.
Working with Gachagua brought issues. Wanderi served him for four months. Gachagua resisted advice, even from security staff. He always wanted things his way.
This made the job tough. As a guard, Wanderi knew the risks. If the boss ignores tips and something goes wrong, the guard takes the blame.
Bosses must heed bodyguard advice. Guards should speak up about concerns. If leaders brush it off, teamwork suffers.
Security fails with stubborn bosses. VIP risks rise then.
Gachagua’s circle added problems. Many there knew little about security. Mistrust grew. Tribalism played a role too.
