Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has firmly asserted his commitment to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), stating unequivocally that no one can expel him from the party.
During an interview with a local media outlet on February 3, 2026, Sifuna, who serves as the ODM Secretary General, addressed concerns about his potential removal from both his position and the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). He emphasized that he remains steadfast in his affiliation with the Orange Party, where he has served for nine years.
“I am in ODM, and nobody can kick me out of ODM. I have no intention of leaving. I’ve reiterated this countless times. Membership in the party is not solely reserved for officials,” he declared.
His comments emerged shortly after speculation regarding his ouster subsided. Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who had initially planned to introduce a motion for Sifuna’s removal, subsequently withdrew the motion to facilitate open dialogue.
Ida Odinga, the widow of Raila Odinga, also contributed to the discourse during her late husband’s 81st posthumous birthday, advocating for a culture of dialogue within the party rather than internal conflicts.
Siaya Governor James Orengo issued a strong warning against any efforts to remove Sifuna as ODM Secretary General, asserting that such actions would jeopardize the party’s integrity. He commended Sifuna’s leadership and loyalty, stating that ODM would struggle to survive if factions succeeded in ousting him. Orengo criticized unnamed groups for undermining the party for personal interests and cautioned against straying from ODM’s foundational principles.
Sifuna’s steadfastness comes amid growing tensions within the ODM, particularly with factions divided over the party’s trajectory as it approaches the 2027 elections. The faction led by Sifuna opposes the party’s ongoing collaboration with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which has prompted the Central Management Committee (CMC) to empower party leader Oburu Odinga to initiate structured discussions with UDA regarding potential pre-coalition agreements.
