Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi jets back from UNCTAD to vie for Kenyan Presidency

Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi jetted back to Kenya from Geneva on 14th February 2021 and formally declared that he is on the ballot to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 Presidential elections.

With this announcement Dr. Kituyi whose role at UNCTAD formally ends today February 15, 2021 joins an already crowded race for the Kenyan Presidency including Deputy President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Amani National Congress Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.

Mukhisa’s entry will complicate the political arithmetic especially in Western Kenya which has been grappling with the Luhya Unity and has been gravitating around ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula.

Speaking in Nairobi after his arrival, the former Minister for Trade challenged politicians to shun intolerance and avoid toxic politics as the country moves to the electioneering period.

“We can civilize our politics. We can tone down the language of toxic political confrontation that causes a negative mood to investors and citizens as part of nation building and that is something I want to contribute to the nation going forward,” Kituyi told reporters.

Mukhisa said that he will not affiliate himself with any of the existing political parties but will instead launch his own.

“One of my unique strengths is that I am the only aspirant for high office today who has never been a member of the Jubilee and ODM Parties or Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke factions,” he boasted.

Kituyi was first appointed to serve as UNCTAD Secretary General on on September 1, 2013 after failing to capture the Bungoma Gubernatorial seat which was won by the current Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka.
