
Siaya County — The recently concluded Piny Luo Festival at the Migwena Cultural Grounds brought together the Luo community from around the world, celebrating their rich heritage and unity. Held under the theme “Luo Unity in Diversity and in Diaspora,” the three-day event featured prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and Kenyan President William Ruto.
The festival, which opened on December 31, 2024, was a vibrant showcase of culture, tradition, and sports. Participants engaged in various activities, including water-based sports, wrestling, and Tero Buru, reflecting the community’s diverse cultural expressions.
Host Governor James Orengo expressed pride in welcoming the Luo Nation from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He emphasized the festival’s role in fostering unity and collaboration within the community.
Governor Gladys Wanga of Homa Bay highlighted the importance of tracing roots and discussing strategies for sociocultural and socioeconomic development. The festival served as a platform for community reflection and future planning.
A standout moment occurred when Raila Odinga made a memorable appearance in jungle green shorts, embodying the festival’s spirit of celebration and informality.
