Canadian Premier Trudeau resigns following party pressure

In a significant political shift, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to resign, following mounting calls from within the Liberal Party for him to step down.

Ending weeks of speculation, Trudeau revealed that he will step aside as party leader but will remain in his role as prime minister until a successor is appointed.

In an address delivered from Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau stated, “I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process.” He emphasized the need for a new direction, acknowledging that “I cannot be the best option in that election.”

Trudeau’s decision comes in the wake of his deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigning unexpectedly on December 16, further intensifying calls for his departure. After nearly a decade in office, which began when he was just 43, Trudeau’s approval ratings have declined sharply among Canadians, who attribute rising living costs and various crises to his leadership. His political allies have increasingly voiced concerns over his policies and approach, adding to the pressure for change.

During a brief Q&A session with reporters, Trudeau defended his record, particularly his economic initiatives aimed at supporting Canada’s middle class and alleviating poverty. However, he cited “internal battles” as a key factor in his decision to resign, noting that the parliament has faced significant gridlock in recent months.

As the Liberal Party prepares for a leadership transition, Trudeau’s announcement marks a pivotal moment in Canadian politics, setting the stage for a new chapter in the country’s governance.
