Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua today afternoon came out to declare that he will be eyeing the top seat come 2022. Mutua is serving his second and last term as the Governor of Machakos County. According to various opinion polls, he ranks among the best county performing Governors countrywide. This is one factor likely to propel his 2022 manifesto as reflected in his declaration today.
In a televised speech, Mutua expressed his sympathy for the state of things in the country, and appealed to Kenyans to consider his bid. The Governor stated how proud he is as a Kenyan, and would love to continue dedicating his time and life to the service of Kenyans even after the lapse of his second term as Machakos Governor. Mutua pledged to create 5 million jobs in his first 3 years in office as the president. However, Kenyans took to social media airing contradictory sentiments. Some questioned his scorecard asking how many jobs he has so far created for Machakos County, while others urged the rest of the country to ignore their tribal affiliations and consider Mutua for the top job.
Mutua’s declaration comes at a time when 2022 succession politics have gathered storm and everyone is hatching plot in their favor and against the other. The Deputy President William Samoei Ruto has declared his presidential ambitions. Ruto’s bid for presidency is however facing fierce opposition from a section of Jubilee members.
