Embakasi East MP Babu Owino confidently asserts that his impressive record in Parliament qualifies him to pursue the Nairobi governor’s seat in the 2027 General Election.
Babu, aiming to succeed Governor Johnson Sakaja, highlights his performance as an MP as proof of his capability to tackle the challenges faced by residents effectively.
In a recent interview, the two-term legislator emphasized that Nairobi residents prioritize service delivery, and his track record showcases his potential to excel if elected governor.
“Nairobians seek quality service. Can Babu Owino provide that? Absolutely,” he affirmed.
Babu plans to run for the governor’s seat under The Mwananchi Party (TMP) banner, following his departure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
He believes that Nairobi’s diverse population means voters will prioritize candidates’ records and manifestos over ethnic backgrounds, making these factors crucial in the upcoming election.
Babu envisions addressing long-standing issues in the capital, such as water supply, waste management, sanitation, healthcare, road infrastructure, and fostering a business-friendly environment.
He points to his achievements in Embakasi East as a testament to what he can accomplish if entrusted with leadership at the county level.
“Based on my efforts in Embakasi East, I am completely confident that Nairobians will choose Babu Owino because I stand out as the best candidate,” he stated.
Babu began his journey in elective politics in 2011 when he was elected chairman of the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU), a role he held for four terms.
He first ventured into mainstream electoral politics in 2013, competing for the ODM primary for the Westlands parliamentary seat but was defeated by the incumbent, Tim Wanyonyi.
In 2017, Babu successfully became the Embakasi East MP, marking his entry into national politics, and he retained his seat in the August 2022 General Election. His parliamentary performance has been recognized by various research firms and pollsters, with many ranking him among the top-performing MPs.
Babu urges Nairobi residents to consider his record when making their choice in the 2027 election.
“While number two is commendable, number one is exceptional. Let’s not settle for good when we can achieve the best,” he encouraged.
Regarding the water shortages in Nairobi, Babu proposes enhancing the use of available water resources while minimizing waste.
He noted that the city consumes approximately 950 million liters of water daily, while the supply stands at about 660 million liters, resulting in a deficit of around 290 million liters.
Babu suggests that this shortfall could be partially resolved by integrating water from Maragua Dam with supplies from Ndakaini Dam, Kikuyu Springs, and Ruiru Dam.
