Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has expressed strong criticism of the government regarding the abduction and assault of journalists. He emphasized that these attacks on media professionals jeopardize press freedom and the public’s right to access information.
During a television interview on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Kaguchia asserted that unconstitutional actions must be confronted, irrespective of political affiliations. He raised concerns about the abduction of a media editor while political leaders continue to support the broad-based government.
“Unconstitutional actions are unacceptable and must be addressed. How can we allow the abduction of a media editor while Oketch stands by the broad-based government?” Kaguchia stated.
His comments reflect growing public concern over the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, who was reportedly taken by armed and masked individuals along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway on Tuesday night, only to be found safe near Masinga Dam in Machakos County.
Kaguchia highlighted that Kiprotich’s situation represents more than just an isolated incident, pointing to a troubling pattern of attacks and intimidation against journalists.
“This issue cannot be dismissed as an isolated case. In Homa Bay, we witnessed an AFP journalist being assaulted and his equipment confiscated; similar incidents occurred in Nakuru West and Ol Kalou,” he noted.
The MP accused authorities of employing violence and seizing journalists’ equipment to suppress information and hinder the public’s access to independent narratives.
“Whenever the government resorts to violence against citizens, it often targets journalists to conceal the truth,” he asserted.
His remarks align with the growing calls from media organizations for enhanced protections for journalists.
The Kenya Media Sector Working Group characterized Kiprotich’s abduction as a significant threat to press freedom, cautioning that such attacks may instill fear and promote self-censorship in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election.
Kaguchia also voiced concerns regarding the defense of the broad-based government by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who has separately condemned Kiprotich’s abduction and called for accountability.
Oketch has maintained that no political or government interest can justify abduction, urging Parliament, the judiciary, and investigative bodies to take decisive action against enforced disappearances.
“I want to take this opportunity to empathize with my brother Alex. Regardless of current politics or any governmental interests that may have influenced this abduction, such actions are deplorable,” he stated.
