Police officers are actively escorting the Linda Mwananchi convoy through Homa Bay in response to increased tensions and reports of groups attempting to disrupt the scheduled rallies.
This heightened security follows incidents where unidentified individuals obstructed roads early Sunday morning, hindering access to Homa Bay town ahead of the political gathering.
Large stones were strategically placed across various roadways, effectively blocking vehicle access to the town.
Evidence suggests that these stones were positioned overnight, as footage captured around 7 AM revealed several roads rendered impassable while political leaders and supporters prepared for the rally set for Sunday, August 16.
On Saturday evening, an unknown group caused damage to property at the Homa Bay Tourist Hotel after raiding the facility and allegedly looting items.
According to hotel proprietor Otieno Odongo, approximately 50 youths arrived at the hotel around 1:30 PM, inquiring about the presence of Linda Mwananchi movement members.
Odongo reported that the youths left after confirming that the group was not at the hotel.
In a statement to the media on Sunday morning, Siaya Governor James Orengo expressed unwavering commitment to proceed with the planned rallies in Sindo and Homa Bay despite attempts to disrupt the convoy.
Orengo accused unnamed individuals of orchestrating groups to attack vehicles and interfere with the convoy as leaders traveled to Homa Bay on Sunday.
“The people stand with us, but these individuals have been organized to target our cars and disrupt our convoy; this is not the Kenya we envision,” Orengo stated.
He affirmed the movement’s determination to hold its scheduled meetings in Sindo and Homa Bay.
Reports indicated that tyres were set ablaze in various parts of the county as preparations for the rallies continued.
The Linda Mwananchi team had organized rallies in Nyandiwa, Sindo, and Homa Bay Town as part of their political mobilization tour.
