Leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the Western region are actively advocating for the selection of Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as President William Ruto’s running mate for the 2027 General Election.
During a gathering at Kima Mission Ground for the Luanda NG-CDF project handover on July 31, 2026, the leaders emphasized Oparanya’s extensive experience, strong national following, and unwavering loyalty, which they believe are essential for fortifying a broad-based government.
Attendees included Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka, ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo, Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba, Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo, Luanda MP Dick Maungu, and numerous Members of County Assembly from the region.
“We must unite in support of Wycliffe Oparanya as President William Ruto’s deputy in 2027. ODM should be the party to deliver the Deputy President, reinforcing our collaborative government efforts,” Aseka urged.
ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo stressed the importance of maintaining the party’s strength in national negotiations and retaining senior leaders within government frameworks.
In his remarks, Oparanya called on the residents of Western Kenya to foster unity and register as voters in significant numbers to enhance the region’s influence.
“Let’s stand together in ODM and ensure our people register in large numbers. Our collective strength will amplify our bargaining power regarding our needs,” Oparanya stated.
He cautioned against supporting the opposition, arguing that it lacks the capacity to deliver meaningful development.
“My experience in opposition has shown me the stagnation it brings. If you seek development, your support should be directed towards the current government,” he asserted.
Governor Ottichilo echoed these sentiments, encouraging Vihiga residents to back the government to continue reaping the benefits of ongoing development projects.
The ODM has recently renewed its campaign to secure the Deputy President position for Wycliffe Oparanya, igniting a new political dynamic within President William Ruto’s inclusive administration.
This discussion gained momentum after National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed suggested that ODM might pursue the Deputy President role in a political partnership with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections, proposing Oparanya as the party’s ideal candidate.
At a public event, Junet expressed that ODM is committed to forming a government alongside President Ruto in 2027, indicating that if the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) retains the presidency, ODM would negotiate for the Deputy President position.
“What have we accomplished? We are coming together to establish the government of 2027 with President William Samoei Ruto. If UDA secures the presidency, who will claim the Deputy? ODM will assert its claim for the Deputy President,” Junet declared.
“And who is the steadfast candidate, having stood with Baba through the years, served as a minister, and held the position of our Deputy Party Leader? That candidate is Wycliffe Oparanya!” he concluded.
