Utumishi Girls Academy Set to Reopen After Deadly Fire

On Monday, June 29, 2026, officials from the Ministry of Education in Kenya engaged in a consultative meeting with parents of students at Utumishi Girls Academy. This meeting took place in preparation for the school’s reopening on Thursday, following its indefinite closure after a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 16 students.

The gathering included school management, ministry representatives, and concerned parents who sought clarity on the safety of their children after the devastating incident. Parents expressed the need for assurances that robust safety measures would be implemented before their children returned to classes later this week.

Rift Valley Regional Education Coordinator James Indimuli reassured parents that the school has swiftly enacted measures to ensure student safety ahead of the reopening. He explained that the management has reorganized existing facilities to create additional space within the school in light of the recent tragedy.

“We’ve made necessary adjustments. We will provide extra space in the dining hall and have converted two classrooms to ensure that every facility is prepared and that students are comfortably accommodated as learning resumes,” Indimuli stated during the meeting.

Throughout the discussion, parents urged education officials to detail the safety interventions being implemented. Their concerns focused on the school’s readiness, dormitory safety, and the overall well-being of students returning after a period of uncertainty.

The reopening occurs amid growing national concern over an increase in incidents of unrest within schools, including several reported dormitory fires in recent months, leading to heightened scrutiny regarding student safety across the education sector.

The school had faced an indefinite closure in May after a catastrophic fire devastated the premises, resulting in the tragic loss of 16 students and injuries to many others, marking one of the most severe school fire tragedies in the country this year.

Following the incident on May 28, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed the closure and announced that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire, as affected families sought answers.

“The cause of the fire remains undetermined, with investigations still ongoing,” Ogamba mentioned at that time, adding that the government had activated hotline number 1199 to support parents and provide counseling services.

In light of the tragedy, recent administrative changes have seen the school’s head teacher transferred as education authorities work to restore confidence ahead of the reopening on Thursday.
