Gor Mahia faces a tough challenge as they head into the 2026/27 season with the departure of midfield star Enock Morrison, the reigning SportPesa League MVP, who has transferred to Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh SC.
The 26-year-old Ghanaian midfielder signed a three-year contract with Al-Merrikh, ending a remarkable two-year stint with K’Ogalo where he became a key player in the region.
Al-Merrikh announced the signing on Sunday, welcoming Morrison as a valuable addition to their squad through 2029.
Local football fans anticipated Morrison’s exit after ongoing contract renewal discussions stalled, and he originally joined Gor Mahia from Asante Kotoko SC in July 2024, quickly becoming integral to the team.
Despite a challenging first season, Morrison played a pivotal role in Gor Mahia’s resurgence during the 2025/26 campaign, leading the club back to the top of Kenyan football and reclaiming the FKF Premier League title.
His impressive consistency garnered him 30 appearances, three goals, four assists, and multiple Man of the Match awards, culminating in him being named the SportPesa League Most Valuable Player and Best Midfielder.
Morrison’s departure creates a significant gap in Gor Mahia’s midfield, especially as they prepare for a demanding CAF Champions League season.
In response, the Gor Mahia management has swiftly acted to bolster the midfield, securing Enock Machaka from Nairobi United FC and signing South Sudan international Jackson Dwang from Posta Rangers FC. Rising star Ben Stanley is also set to take on a larger role.
However, replacing Morrison’s unique influence and creativity will be a considerable challenge for the coaching staff. He leaves Gor Mahia as a league champion and a celebrated player, marking one of the club’s finest foreign signings.
While his move to Al-Merrikh opens new opportunities in North Africa, Gor Mahia must urgently devise a strategy to fill the void left by the talisman who spearheaded their return to dominance.
