Kanjama Highlights Key Provisions of US-Iran Peace Memorandum

Charles Kanjama, President of the Law Society of Kenya, recently shared his thoughts on the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding via a post on X dated June 18, 2026. He highlighted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s comments and images of the signed document, stressing the importance of the agreement’s text for interpretation.

“Here’s the full text of the US-Iran MOU. No more speculation or biased commentary. The facts speak for themselves. Let’s hope all parties adhere to this for lasting peace,” he remarked.

Kanjama’s comments came amid heightened global interest in the agreement, seen as a framework to ease tensions between the US and Iran. His post gained traction on social media, prompting legal and policy experts to underscore the significance of primary documents in evaluating diplomatic changes. Pezeshkian called the document a “historic” step towards peace based on mutual respect and sovereignty.

Key Provisions of the US-Iran Memorandum

Reportedly mediated by Pakistan and signed around June 17, 2026, the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aims to halt hostilities and pave the way for a comprehensive settlement within 60 days, extendable by mutual agreement.

It includes an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties, commitments to avoid threats or force, and measures to enhance maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels and a gradual reduction of military restrictions.

The memorandum also addresses economic issues, proposing waivers on Iranian oil exports, access to frozen assets, and discussions on reconstruction financing with regional partners. It outlines a framework for gradually lifting sanctions based on agreed timelines.

In terms of nuclear provisions, Iran must reaffirm its commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons, with oversight from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for monitoring and verification. Both sides will maintain their current positions during the interim phase to prevent escalation.

Diplomatic Framework

The agreement features an implementation mechanism to ensure compliance and facilitate negotiations on unresolved matters, which will commence after initial measures, including the ceasefire and easing of maritime restrictions, are in place.

The final settlement will be presented for approval through a binding UN Security Council resolution, emphasizing respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and structured diplomatic engagement.

International reactions to the agreement have been mixed. Some observers see it as a potential stabilizer for energy markets and a means to reduce regional tensions, while others express concerns over verification, enforcement, and long-term compliance. The developments continue to draw global attention as stakeholders evaluate the interim framework’s implementation and its broader implications for regional security and diplomacy.
