Museveni Declines Arsenal Title Celebration, Urges Focus on Jobs

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni sparked a lively discussion by declining invitations to celebrate Arsenal’s Premier League victory. He emphasized that Africans should prioritize jobs, development, and poverty eradication over European football.

Museveni expressed surprise at the expectation for him to join the celebration, stating, “What is Arsenal? I don’t know what they’ve done to warrant a celebration.”

Although he played football in the past, he redirected his focus to pressing national issues since 1966. “I’m committed to Uganda’s liberation, poverty alleviation, and job creation,” he remarked.

He urged people to prioritize local communities over foreign football culture, questioning, “How can we celebrate European clubs when our people face economic challenges?”

His comments came as Arsenal fans in East Africa rejoiced over the club’s triumph, marking an end to years of near misses. In Kenya, President William Ruto and various leaders congratulated Arsenal for their resilience.

“Our dreams may be deferred, but they’re never extinguished. Congratulations to Arsenal for exemplifying determination,” Ruto stated.

Celebrations erupted across Nairobi, with fans gathering in pubs and entertainment spots, proudly wearing the team’s colors and cheering into the night. The excitement spilled onto social media, where fans shared videos, memes, and accolades for manager Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to its first title after several near victories.
