Gladys Wanga, Chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emphasized that all party leaders will share responsibility if the party underperforms in the upcoming general election. Speaking at the ODM Party Leaders’ Retreat in Mombasa on May 3, 2026, Wanga addressed the need for collective decision-making following the passing of Raila Odinga.
“This marks our first retreat since losing our leader, Baba Raila Amollo Odinga,” Wanga stated, acknowledging the reliance many had on Raila for guidance. She urged party members to embrace shared accountability under the leadership of Oburu Odinga.
Wanga called for an inclusive approach, reminding delegates that the party constitution prioritizes the voices of all members. “Every voice, from grassroots to leadership, must influence our direction,” she asserted, reiterating that ODM’s primary goal remains to secure power through constitutional means at both national and county levels.
She warned party officials that if the upcoming election yields disappointing results, the responsibility will rest on all leaders, not just one individual. This reflects rising concerns within ODM regarding its future organization post-Raila’s leadership.
Wanga encouraged leaders to foster broader participation and representation within the party, stressing the importance of collective decision-making. “We must prioritize our party above personal interests,” she urged, advocating for unity and practical reforms.
Wanga also highlighted the talent and experience within ODM, affirming that the party remains a formidable political force.
Ruth Odinga echoed Wanga’s call for unity, cautioning against internal divisions that could jeopardize ODM’s future. Speaking on May 2 in Seme, she rejected factionalism and urged collaboration among key party figures to ensure a united front.
