Clashes Disrupt Seme Funeral as James Orengo Condemns Chaos

Tension and political drama overshadowed the funeral of Eliud Nyikal Okaka in Seme, Kisumu County, as rival factions clashed during the ceremony.

The burial at Ridore Primary School faced disruption when two competing groups confronted each other, prompting clergy to shorten the service and call for an immediate burial without speeches.

Governor Orengo condemned the interruption and praised the local community for their warm reception. “I extend my deepest gratitude to the great people of Seme for the overwhelming love you showed me today as I paid my respects to Eliud Nyikal Okaka,” he stated.

He described the events as deeply troubling, asserting that a solemn occasion had been tarnished. “It is both shameful and a national disgrace that a solemn send-off could be disrupted. The clergy had to cut the service short to maintain order and dignity,” Orengo added.

Despite the chaos, he affirmed that political pressure would not hinder his movement. “Let it be clear; no intimidation, no teargas, and no acts of desperation will silence the Linda Mwananchi Movement,” he declared. “Linda Mwananchi is a force of the people, unstoppable and unwavering in its mission to uplift every Kenyan’s voice.”

As tensions escalated, Orengo was escorted out of the funeral tent, prompting Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to intervene and restore order among the mourners.

The burial continued under heightened tension, underscoring the growing political friction at public gatherings. Several leaders, including Homa Bay’s Gladys Wanga, attended the ceremony, which marked the passing of Mzee Okaka at the age of 104.

In their social media posts after the event, Nyong’o and Wanga focused on honoring Mzee Nyikal’s life rather than addressing the earlier tensions. Nyong’o praised him as a dedicated educator and respected community leader. “His legacy endures through those he touched, defined by service and integrity,” he remarked.

Wanga reflected on the gathering, emphasizing the values Mzee Nyikal embodied. “We gathered in Ridore, Seme Constituency, to celebrate his extraordinary life, marked by a deep commitment to education and social development,” she noted.
