Babu Owino Targets Nairobi Governor Seat, Eyes 2032 Presidency

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has articulated his political strategy, revealing his intention to run for Nairobi governor, serve a single term, and subsequently pursue the presidency in 2032.

During a gathering in Kisumu on April 26, 2026, connected to the Linda Mwananchi movement, Owino declared, “As Babu, I will seek the Nairobi governorship for one term, then in 2032, I will aim for the presidency.”

These statements emerged amidst a series of mobilization events attended by notable opposition figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo. Prior to the rally, the leaders participated in a church service at Triumphant Christian Church in Nyalenda, Kisumu.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has been actively conducting nationwide mobilization meetings, having held previous events in Nakuru before transitioning to Kisumu. These gatherings have united several opposition-aligned leaders, who are collaboratively shaping political messaging in preparation for the 2027 elections.

During the Kisumu visit, Sifuna commended Owino’s political ascent, attributing it to his humble beginnings. “Babu symbolizes that God can elevate you from humble circumstances to significant heights,” Sifuna remarked, reflecting on Owino’s upbringing in Nyalenda, where his mother was involved in small-scale alcohol brewing, contrasting it with his current standing in national politics.

Owino has also voiced concerns regarding intimidation associated with his political activities. On April 22, 2026, he alleged that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were targeting his security personnel in the lead-up to the Kisumu rally. “They are dispatching DCI officers to arrest my security officer… in an effort to undermine the Kisumu rally,” he stated in a social media post.

Additionally, he highlighted previous incidents where his aide, Oliver Ochieng, and Ochieng’s wife faced arrest and assault by officers in February, describing these actions as attempts to disrupt the Linda Mwananchi mobilization efforts.

As the Kisumu events unfolded, the political atmosphere remained charged with energy as leaders continued their mobilization activities. Owino took action when individuals associated with political operatives were instructed to leave the venue, and they complied without incident.

The MP reiterated that the mobilization efforts focus on enhancing citizen engagement in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
