Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a man believed to be the key mobilizer behind the violent demonstrations that rocked Yala town earlier this month.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Silas Asitiba, was apprehended during a targeted operation conducted in Ramula area, Gem Sub County. According to investigators, the arrest followed actionable intelligence that led officers to a local drinking den where Asitiba was found and taken into custody without incident.
Authorities allege that Asitiba played a central role in organizing and mobilizing a group that carried out destructive activities, including an attack on Ramula Police Post on April 6, 2026. The incident reportedly resulted in significant property damage and heightened tensions in the area.
Police sources indicate that the suspect is currently undergoing processing and is expected to be formally charged with multiple offences, including arson, assault, malicious damage to property, and incitement to violence.
Investigators have further revealed that the operation is ongoing, with efforts intensified to track down additional suspects believed to have financed and coordinated the unrest.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations cautioned members of the public against engaging in unlawful demonstrations. While acknowledging that the right to picket is protected under Kenyan law, the agency warned that acts of violence, destruction of property, and attacks on security installations would attract firm legal consequences.
Members of the public have been urged to report any information that may assist ongoing investigations through the DCI’s anonymous reporting channels.
The arrest marks a significant development in the probe into the Yala unrest, as authorities seek to restore calm and uphold the rule of law in Siaya County.
