Netanyahu’s Easter Message Amid Rising Israel-Iran Tensions

On April 5, 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended heartfelt Easter greetings to Christians in Israel, the United States, and around the world.

In a post on X, Netanyahu expressed, “To our Christian friends in Israel, the United States, and globally, we wish you a blessed and joyful Easter.” He highlighted the severe persecution faced by Christians in countries like Syria, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Turkey, asserting that Israel uniquely serves as a protector of its growing Christian community in the region.

This message comes in the wake of escalating tensions following the onset of direct conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran on February 28, 2026. Operation Epic Fury (US) and Roar of the Lion (Israel) targeted Iranian leadership, resulting in the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials. In response, Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones aimed at Israel and US bases in the Gulf.

Israel’s Christian population, estimated at around 185,000 to 190,000—approximately 1.9% of the total population—has steadily increased over recent decades. Many Israeli Christians, primarily Arab Christians in cities like Nazareth and Haifa, enjoy full citizenship rights, access to education, and active participation in public life, including rising enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces.

This situation starkly contrasts with neighboring countries. The 2026 World Watch List by Open Doors ranks Syria as the sixth most dangerous country for Christians, while Nigeria holds the seventh position, with thousands of annual faith-related deaths. Ongoing persecution in Lebanon, Turkey, and Iran continues to drive emigration, threatening long-established Christian communities.

Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s commitment to safeguarding holy sites in Jerusalem, the birthplace of Christianity, despite ongoing security threats. “Even under fire, our commitment remains unwavering: to defend life, to protect liberty, and to ensure that every believer can pray in peace,” he stated.

As cultural destruction unfolds in Iran due to US-Israeli strikes, reports indicate damage to heritage sites, including the Golestan Palace in Tehran and at least 56 other museums and monuments nationwide. While US and Israeli officials assert that operations target military infrastructure, the international community remains divided on the issue.

Pope Leo XIV has called for dialogue and de-escalation, urging the protection of civilians and prayers for peace in conflict zones. Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued travel advisories and evacuation orders for nationals in affected areas.

Concluding his Easter message, Netanyahu offered a universal appeal: “May the message of renewal, hope, and faith shine brightly in your homes and hearts. Happy Easter.” His words reaffirm Israel’s commitment to religious liberty, positioning the country as a sanctuary for Christians amidst regional turmoil.
