Eric Omondi Launches Boat Rescue Amid Nairobi Floods

Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has unveiled a new initiative aimed at helping residents affected by ongoing floods in Nairobi, as heavy rains continue to disrupt daily life and claim lives.

The move comes shortly after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned that several regions across the country will experience increased rainfall between March 17 and March 23, with the intensity expected to rise in some areas. The advisory follows recent downpours that have caused severe flooding in parts of Nairobi, leaving dozens dead and many others stranded.

In response to the crisis, Omondi introduced the “Sisi Kwa Sisi” boat rescue initiative, which he says is designed to assist people trapped in floodwaters. In a video shared on his social media platforms, the comedian is seen riding a white boat branded with the initiative’s name, explaining that it will be used during emergencies to reach affected residents.

He noted that many flood victims do not die instantly but remain stranded for hours without help, suggesting that timely rescue efforts could save lives. According to Omondi, the initiative will offer emergency support to those caught in dangerous situations during heavy rains.

The floods, triggered by intense rainfall earlier this month, have overwhelmed drainage systems and caused the Nairobi River to overflow. The disaster has swept away vehicles, damaged infrastructure and disrupted transport across several estates, highlighting the growing impact of seasonal weather patterns.

While some Kenyans have praised the initiative as creative and timely, others have questioned its effectiveness, pointing out that one boat may not be enough to address the widespread flooding affecting multiple areas of the city.
