Auditor-General Dismisses Ksh1.3 Trillion e-Citizen Scandal Claims

The Office of the Auditor-General has refuted social media claims of a Ksh1.3 trillion scandal linked to the government’s e-Citizen platform.

In a statement, the office emphasized that reports alleging Ksh1.3 trillion is lost or unaccounted for are false and misleading.

“We have noted misleading information circulating on social media, inaccurately citing the Auditor-General’s Report regarding Ksh1.3 trillion,” the statement clarified.

This clarification arrives amid increased online debate, where posts incorrectly assert that the national audit report revealed significant financial discrepancies related to the digital services platform. The Auditor-General’s office reiterated that it has not issued any such report.

The Office urged the public to rely solely on official communications and published audit reports from its formal channels. It cautioned against the dissemination of unverified information, highlighting that misinformation can undermine public trust in oversight institutions.

The Auditor-General is constitutionally tasked with auditing and reporting on the accounts of national and county governments, state organs, and public entities, with reports submitted to Parliament and made public through established procedures.

This clarification aims to dispel speculation and reinforce the audit process’s integrity, distancing the Office from the Ksh1.3 trillion claim.
