Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results.
The results show a notable increase in the number of learners achieving a mean grade of A, rising from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024. This upward trend indicates a steady rise in top scorers across the country.
During the announcement, CS Ogamba commended the students for their impressive performance, attributing the success to the new grading system implemented in 2023. Under this system, only two mandatory subjects—Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language)—are used to calculate the mean grade. This marks a departure from the previous structure, which considered five subjects across three cluster groups, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, a science subject, and a humanities subject. In addition, Ogamba noted that candidates’ exam papers were marked anonymously to enhance transparency in the evaluation process.
The results also indicate a significant increase in the number of candidates eligible for direct university entry, with 246,391 learners (25.53 percent) achieving a grade of C+ and above, compared to 201,133 (22.27 percent) in 2023. Furthermore, the number of candidates with a grade of C- rose to 476,889 (49.41 percent), up from 401,216 (44.2 percent) the previous year.
Additionally, 605,774 candidates (62.76 percent) attained a D+ and above, compared to 526,222 (58.22 percent) in 2023. However, 48,333 candidates received a mean grade of E, comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.
In terms of exam integrity, 840 candidates had their results canceled due to involvement in examination irregularities. Furthermore, the results of 2,829 candidates have been withheld pending investigations into suspected irregularities, with a resolution expected within 30 days. CS Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against 91 contracted professionals and teachers who facilitated these irregularities.
For individual candidate results, CS Ogamba directed students to visit https://results.knec.ac.ke. He also advised any candidates facing difficulties accessing their results online to use the toll-free numbers 0800724900 or 0800721410 for assistance.
Overall, the 2024 KCSE results reflect a significant improvement in student performance, underscoring the effectiveness of the new grading system and the dedication of Kenyan learners.
