Authorities have disclosed the identities of the six passengers who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County. The helicopter, registered as 5Y-D5B, went down at 4:45 PM in the Chepkieb area shortly after takeoff.
The area chief reported that responders found scattered bodies alongside the wreckage. Among the deceased was Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno, who was traveling with his team. The pilot, identified as George Were from Nyakach, Kisumu, also perished in the incident.
Amos Kipngetich Rotich, a forester and MP’s bodyguard from Emurua Dikirr, and Nick Koskey, a cameraman from Bomet County, were also among the victims. Other identified passengers included Carlos Keter, a high school teacher and resident of Emurua Dikirr, and Wycliffe Rono, an employee of the Narok County government.
Authorities noted that two bodies were burned beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts. The remaining victims were transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue in Eldoret last night. Preliminary reports suggest the crash resulted from adverse weather conditions, leading to the helicopter catching fire.
Investigations into the incident are underway. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that the aircraft was en route from Endebes to Mosoriot at the time of the crash. KCAA has initiated procedures to assist the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID) in its inquiry.
Director General Emile Arao expressed condolences, stating, “The Authority extends its sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” and assured that further details will be shared as verified information emerges.
