At the age of 22, Truphena Muthoni has profoundly influenced public discourse surrounding environmental preservation, psychological well-being, and youth-driven advocacy, primarily through the act of embracing trees.
During a television interview on Sunday, December 14, 2025, shortly after undertaking a demanding 72-hour attempt, the conservationist disclosed that she could no longer quantify the number of trees she had hugged throughout her life.
Her journey to public prominence began in February 2025 when she successfully concluded a 48-hour uninterrupted tree-embracing marathon, a feat that has since been formally acknowledged by Guinness World Records.
This 48-hour act, performed at Nairobi’s Michuki Memorial Park, garnered widespread local and global interest, ultimately leading to its official recognition by Guinness World Records. Encouraged by the positive reception, Muthoni subsequently traveled to Nyeri County to undertake an extended 72-hour marathon, which attracted considerable coverage from news outlets and environmental proponents.
“I have been dedicated to environmental causes since the age of five,” she stated. “While I have lost track of the total number of trees I’ve embraced, I’ve committed to two significant hugs this year. The 48-hour attempt has already been officially confirmed and documented; this recent one will require five days for ratification.”
Beneath the serene depiction of a young woman embracing nature for prolonged periods, extensive preparation is evident. Muthoni has transparently discussed the rigorous physical and psychological fortitude necessary for such sustained challenges. Her regimen encompassed prolonged hikes, simulated scenarios, and frequent practice embraces, even incorporating exposure to inclement weather and low temperatures.
“My family provides unwavering support and expresses pride in my endeavors,” she explained. “Primarily, these are mental challenges, though I also undertake physical training. I complete non-stop walks of 42 kilometers. I engage in numerous tree-hugging practice sessions. Prior to this 72-hour attempt, I had completed 35 hours on Mazingira Day, and a subsequent 60-hour session at a scouts’ camp. I also practice fasting. During the actual hugging events, I abstain from water, but in preparation for those three days, I consume substantial amounts during practice. I manage bodily needs entirely through mental discipline.”
The Rationale Behind Tree Embracing
Muthoni views affection as the fundamental principle of environmental preservation. She contends that individuals are more inclined to safeguard elements with which they share an emotional bond. Through the act of embracing trees, her aim is to encourage others to cultivate this attachment and consequently engage in efforts to combat deforestation.
The symbolic gesture is intentionally straightforward and accessible, enabling anyone to embrace a tree and participate. Beyond its visual impressiveness, this endeavor aims to heighten understanding regarding the degradation of Kenya’s vital water sources, foster afforestation, and advance the concept that ecological care is intrinsically linked to societal welfare.
