Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has signalled his intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, unveiling Makadara MP George Aladwa as his preferred running mate. Kuria made the announcement on Monday, December 1, through a poster that quickly sparked conversations across the political landscape.
Explaining his choice, Kuria said his decision to partner with Aladwa was driven by shared values rather than ethnic considerations. He emphasized that both leaders understand the challenges faced by Nairobi residents and have the managerial and political experience required to improve service delivery in the capital city. Kuria argued that the county needs leaders who can work beyond tribal lines and focus on meaningful development and accountability.
According to the former CS, Nairobi’s governance demands a leadership team that blends experience, strategic thinking, and practical knowledge of urban management. He insisted that Aladwa, a seasoned legislator and former mayor, fits that profile and would bring valuable insight into county operations.
The announcement triggered a wave of mixed reactions across social media platforms. Some Kenyans questioned Kuria’s chances of unseating Governor Johnson Sakaja, arguing that the current governor still commands significant support. Others suggested that Kuria’s move might be aimed at disrupting traditional voting blocs, particularly those aligned with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. A section of supporters, however, welcomed the ticket, saying the partnership represents a fresh approach to Nairobi politics.
Kuria’s declaration adds to the growing list of political realignments taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts note that the Nairobi race is already attracting early interest, with potential candidates positioning themselves long before official campaigns begin.
