A section of Nairobi Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) has renewed efforts to impeach Johnson Sakaja, claiming they have gathered sufficient support to table a formal motion seeking his removal from office.
The push is being spearheaded by South B MCA and Deputy Minority Leader Waithera Chege, working alongside Baba Dogo MCA Godfrey Majiwa. The legislators say they are ready to proceed but were temporarily blocked by procedural hurdles at the Nairobi County Assembly.
Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, March 3, Chege said the group had already secured the required signatures and prepared the impeachment notice. However, the process stalled after the Assembly Clerk allegedly failed to appear to formally receive the documents.
According to Chege, the motion contains 22 charges against the Nairobi governor, although the specific accusations remain confidential for now. She explained that the details will only be made public once the paperwork is officially received and forwarded to the Speaker.
The MCA noted that the law requires the Clerk to verify the authenticity of signatures before transmitting the motion for formal consideration by the Assembly. She expressed confidence that the documents would be submitted by mid-morning on Wednesday, March 4.
The renewed push revives a political battle that had cooled in recent months after an earlier impeachment attempt collapsed. About five months ago, MCAs had initiated a similar process, but it was abandoned following high-level political consultations.
At the time, President William Ruto met United Democratic Alliance–aligned MCAs at State House and advised against the ouster move. Separately, the late opposition leader Raila Odinga also convened ODM legislators and MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, where leaders agreed to drop the plan amid concerns it could destabilise the capital.
